Hey, Angle! Leave those neaps at home...

This is the saga of Aldred the Bearded (or hairy... the scholars continue to argue on the finer points of translation from Anglish or is it Saxonish)?

Aldred the Bearded is the Saxon lord who will contest a hard fought Dux Britanniarum campaign on my behalf. His saga will be the story how he (hopefully) prises his new kingdom, Rhegin from the hands of Agricola the Flatulent who will take the field as my brothers proxy. Yes this is a blood feud of sorts which will see my brother and I fight a Dux campaign on table top simulator using an adapted Saga mod. As we both have busy family lives the updates are likely to be sporadic. But hopefully we will push on through to till the campaign draws to a conclusion.

Dux Britanniarum is a Wargames ruleset for the dark ages in the age of Arthur Written by the Too Fat Lardies... The rules lend its name from a title for the military leader for the whole of Britain...

The saga begins...

Aldred was born the 13th son of a turnip farmer around the year of 448 AD.  But our story starts almost 30 years later.  It was a dark late winters evening somewhere on the Northern shores of Europe, Aldred and his two longest serving friends (well biggest, two of his biggest friends) from school (school who are we kidding) from the field.  They had finally saved up enough to buy their first beer at the local beer hall known as the Swedes Arms.  25 years of turnip picking had taken its toll on our heros.  That and the heady change of beer rather than their usual tipple, turnip moonshine, it went straight to their heads.  After tasting the golden nectar their horizons were lifted.  No more could they scratch a living in amongst the neeps of Neuharlingersiel, they had to find a way to drag their sorry arses out of the mud and to a lofty perch where they could drink beer every day, well until they got married anyway…

It so happened that on their drunken stagger home Aldred hit upon the idea of “borrowing” one of the many boats moored up on the shore and sail off to make their fortune.  Somehow he managed to convince his two giant companions to join him and off they sailed into the night…

Over the next months they bunny hopped their way along the northern shore of Europe (they had never driven a boat before that night and hadn’t quite mastered the biting point you see).  Their many stops allowed them to pick up stragglers along the way.

Training hard with a steel and determination born now of a realisation that almost all the best years of their lives had been wasted in a blinkered belief there was nothing more to life than the next turnip.  Aldred The Bearded (or Hairy),  with his two trusted giant companions Horsa and Henguist stood at the purple headed bow of their ship staring across at the fertile coast that opens up before them.  So this is where we shall carve ourselves a kingdom!

Step one in the plan to royalty was first to acquire some easy money.  So Aldred outlined his plan to snatch a local lord and ransome him for some “filthy lucre”...

The plan is that both my brother and I shall narrate the campaign. Myself through the Saga of Aldred the Bearded and my brother through the Annals of Rhegin. Verses/entries covering that first raid will be posted tomorrow.

In the mean time here are the main characters - Yes we really did some poor thugs and some rich softies, which makes quite a good narrative for the campaign:
